Learning the Art of Surrender in Midlife with Haith Johnson

Today on Midlife Conversations, I sit down with my inspiring friend, Haith Johnson, a celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of La’Host Hair & Wigs. Haith’s story is astounding—from nearly shutting her business down during COVID to handling a major hack that drained her PayPal and hijacked her Facebook page.

Despite these challenges, Haith’s faith, determination, and outlook on life propelled her to rebuild and thrive. She delves into her journey of overcoming homelessness, the significance of forgiveness, and utilizing her gifts to make a difference. Haith’s perspective on gratitude, emotional release, and turning chaos into opportunity offers invaluable lessons for anyone facing adversity.

There are a lot of great lessons in this episode. But in summary, what I think Haith did to surrender through the chaos in midlife is:

  • Get a very good grasp on what is actually urgent and what is not
  • Look for the lesson in things as to what you are supposed to be learning and turn to faith to get you through
  • Strong sense of emotional release
  • Ask for help unapologetically
  • Stay in a practice of gratitude, even when things are super stressful and chaotic
  • Don’t make it about you – making it about helping other people
  • Faith, promise, and surrender to what you believe in

Haith built a beauty brand from the ground up and was consider a celebrity hairstylist by the age of 20 with a wealth of experience spanning over 38 years in the beauty industry. Alongside her husband, she established a salon in 1996, committed to delivering exceptional customer service and top-quality hair care products. Their brand, Le’Host, is widely available in over 1000 leading retail such as Walmart, national beauty supply chains, grocery stores, and online, launched their first concept franchise store model within Walmart in August 2022. LeHost Hair & Wigs is listed in 8 VA hospitals across the country. In 2020 Haith received a visit from the White House to receive medals of honor from the Second Lady Karen Pence and Deputy Cheif Susan Powers for the work that she and her husband do for veteran women. Haith is deeply committed to giving back to the community, offering complimentary wigs for cancer survivors, and lending support to female veterans. She has earned numerous accolades and certifications for her outstanding contributions to the beauty business.
