I met Kim Lyons when we were in our 20s, during our bodybuilding, steamed-chicken steamed-broccoli, no fat diet days and we happened to get reconnected YEARS later at the hair salon lol. She is 50 and I’m 52 at the time of this interview and while we have both left the bodybuilding world many moons ago, we still have a lot of things in common, especially in terms of helping others AND what we do for ourselves for age optimizing. The biggest thing we BOTH have in common is that we BOTH feel better in our 50s than we did in our 20s! And that’s HUGE! So today we are just having a conversation about aging well!

We get a lot of messages from women in midlife who seem to have simply given up on life. They have a ton of stories that are NOT aided by the masses and the media. But it does NOT have to be that way! No, it’s not just aging! It doesn’t HAVE TO BE LIKE THAT! And no, it’s not all about looks. It’s about the labs, the aches, the pains, your HEALTH and vitality.

The Number One Thing You Can Do For Your Health

Fall in love with muscle. Fall in love with building and supporting your muscles. Fall in love with strength training. Fall in love with the art of the muscle – NOT with the obsessive calorie counting. Muscle is the foundation of our success. Focusing on protein, the benefits of clean protein, and basics of building muscle will help ALL OTHER THINGS. This is the foundation of health…not being a cardio queen. And NO, even though we are former figure athletes, lifting weights will NOT make you look like a bodybuilder. There is not ONE person we know of in midlife who is doing really well health wise that does NOT focus on their protein and muscle 🙂

The Best Way To Eat for Optimal Health in Midlife

Both Kim and I are in agreement with the mindset that it’s important to eat a whole, real, natural, unprocessed diet. It’s NOT about following the fad diets – it’s about whole nutrition and getting rid of our nutrient deficiencies. Stop eating processed, chemical laden food. Get in the good water. Get in the nutrients and supplements and vitamins that you need in order to support your body and get rid of any deficiencies you may have. And of course, prioritize protein. Even if you cannot meet your body weight in protein, start just “getting in more” every single day. If you’re only eating 40-50 grams of protein per day, you are REALLY low but there are easy little tweaks you can make each day to get more protein in.

Do Keto and Carnivore Make You Feel Better? Why Eat Veggies?

While some people might FEEL better on these keto and carnivore diets, without getting the phytonutrients we get from vegetables, it CAN lead to rapid aging. Some people, although not as common as most people think, have problems with things like oxalates. BUT this doesn’t mean you should avoid those things all together – you can supplement with those. You have to know YOUR body and how you can feed it the way it needs to be fed.

Some BioOptimizing (aka Bio Hacking) Tools We Recommend

What If You Don’t Have Those Tools? What Is Most Important to Get For Less Money?

  1. Get a dry brush
  2. Get a gua sha stone
  3. Get outside each day
  4. Get a sauna bag
  5. Get a Quantum Energy Necklace
  6. Get electrolytes

If You Could Only Do THREE Things To Age Better RIGHT NOW, What Should They Be?

  1. Get up in the morning and drink water with electrolytes in the sunshine outside
  2. Move your body first thing in the morning
  3. Do resistance training
