Some of you might remember Shivan from my Midlife Conversations Summit when we deep dived into aging parents! Today, we are talking about something completely different – SIBO! Shivan has helped countless people with healing SIBO, she is a best selling author of Healing SIBO, and is the go to SIBO expert! After suffering a number of symptoms herself, she dove deep, became her own health detective (like I always preach) and found her answers hidden in SIBO.
What is SIBO?
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is the presence of excessive bacteria in the small intestine and can be the cause of chronic diarrhea and malabsorption – which leads to the potential to suffer with nutritional deficiencies and osteoporosis. What happens is that it harms the migrating motor complex, which is a sweeping motion in the small intestines that sweeps out bacteria and debris.
You may have SIBO if you:
- Are Easily Bloated
- Are Constipated
- Have diarrhea
- You Alternate between constipation and diarrhea
- Have Restless Leg Syndrome
- Have Rosacea
- Weird B12 Levels
- Low Ferritin
- Have ruled out parasites, ruled out candida, and everything else but still have mystery symptoms
SIBO mimics other things…and then it causes other things.
Where Does SIBO Come From?
SIBO is most commonly caused by food poisoning – but can also be a result of the flu, irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal motility disorders, chronic pancreatitis, surgery complications, traumatic brain injury, opioids, c-sections, adhesions, and more! And yes, a lot of people get food poisoning and will never get SIBO. It also depends on your genetics, your expression, your detox pathways, your liver phases, your lifestyle growing up, etc.
Why Do Fermented Foods and Probiotics Make People With SIBO Feel Worse?
There is an overgrowth of fermentation and you are a microbrewery. It’s likely adding fuel to the fire. You should wait until you clear the SIBO, get a good balance, and then try to add these things back into your life.
How to Test For SIBO
You can test for SIBO via breath test or endoscopy culture. Aerodiagnostics and Trio Smart are some really trusted at-home breath test options. Essentially you will follow a special diet for 24 hours, fast, and drink a special solution. The bacteria will then start producing their gas and you will test your breath every 20 minutes for a specified amount of time (roughly a 3 hour test). You will learn what type of SIBO you have (if you have it).
What Are the Types of SIBO
There are three types of SIBO:
- Hydrogen producers
- Methane producers
- Hydrogen sulfide producers
How to Treat SIBO
Some people can take the first round of treatment for SIBO and be fine. Others have a harder time and need more support in several areas: both with getting your migrating motor complex moving and reducing the bacterial overgrowth. When those two things happen, your microbiome can be balanced again. There are three main treatments for SIBO that are pretty efficient. You can take the herbal route (30 days), the pharmaceutical route (2 weeks), or the elemental diet route (17 days). After each treatment, you want to retest.

Millions of Americans suffer from bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food intolerances, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Many spend years in pain before they figure out just what’s going on with their gut. And while irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is commonly diagnosed, SIBO, a disorder with basically all the same symptoms, is not. Some studies show eighty percent of people who suffer from IBS, mostly women, likely also have SIBO, an overlooked health issue that is difficult to diagnose.
So, what is SIBO? The acronym stands for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, a disorder in which bacteria that usually live in other parts of the gut start to proliferate and take up residence in the small intestine. This causes a whole confluence of symptoms, ranging from bloating and cramps, to uncontrollable weight gain or weight loss, to even malnutrition when the bacteria eat up vital nutrients from our food.
Now, in this groundbreaking book, Shivan shares her step-by-step plan to treat, manage, and even heal SIBO, with information on what to eat and what to avoid, how to build a routine to manage your symptoms, and how to work with your doctor to find supplements and medications that promote healing. Shivan also includes a 21-day plan, which includes more than 40 recipes to put you on the path to recovery. Whether you’re SIBO-diagnosed or SIBO-suspicious, this empowering guide will change the way you approach and think about your gut and overall health.
In this episode, you will learn:
- What is SIBO and the symptoms you should pay attention to
- What are things you can do to heal the body
- Why digestion is so important
